How to choose musical gifts for toddlers

Start with whether the child should make the sound themselves or trigger songs and effects, then choose how much variety the toy genuinely needs to provide.

Start with a sound they make themselves

Shakers, drums and xylophones give a clear link between the child's action and the sound that follows, which makes them a strong starting point for musical play. Electronic guitars, drums and other musical toys become more useful when playing along with tunes, lights or different sound modes is part of the attraction. Choose the extra technology for what it adds to the play, not simply because it has more features.

One instrument can be enough

A single rainmaker, drum or xylophone can work well when repeating one satisfying sound-making action is the main appeal. Choose a larger drum kit, microphone set or multi-sound toy when switching between sounds, singing or putting on a little performance is genuinely part of the activity. More instruments are useful when they create different things to do, rather than just more pieces.

Check what happens after each press, tap or shake

Some musical toys respond only while the child is actively playing them; others can start a longer tune, sequence or light-up effect. The first keeps the child in direct control of each sound, while the second can be better for listening, following along or performing with the music. Look at what the controls actually trigger, because two musical toys can create very different kinds of play.
